Chocolate Friendship Bread Recipe

Have you made Amish Friendship Bread Starter yet?

If you have, you’ve been enjoying moist, cinnamon friendship bread for days now. Ready for something new to make with your sweet sourdough? I’ve got friendship bread variations for you. And I’m starting with this chocolate friendship bread.

Chocolate Friendship Bread Recipe

When I shared the original friendship bread recipe, I realized many of you wanted a variation of that bread that didn’t use pudding. And really, in that recipe, you can just leave the pudding out.

Friends had told me to make chocolate friendship bread, just swap out the vanilla pudding for chocolate pudding. Simple as that! And you can totally try that (although I’d still recommend adding mini chocolate chips to the batter).

But for those of you wanting pudding-less bread, we’ve got you covered with this chocolate bread recipe.

This basic bread recipe is originally a very moist bread. Adding cocoa powder to a non-chocolate recipe can be tricky since cocoa powder soaks up a lot of moisture and can make baked goods dry. We tested this recipe several times to get the right amount of chocolate flavor paired with the perfect amount of moisture to create a bread texture that we liked. Some versions came out crazy moist, but too “cake-like”. Other times the bread was too dry.

What we ended up with was perfectly sliceable. Full of crazy chocolate intensity by using not only cocoa powder but also mini chocolate chips.

Oh…and to top it, I made a simple chocolate ganache. Don’t use mini chocolate chips for the ganache, though. They won’t melt smoothly. Use full-size chocolate chips and some heavy cream. Mix it together and slather it on top of that chocolate bread.

Pour yourself a cup of milk or coffee and enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup Amish Friendship Bread Starter
  • 1 1/2 cups mini chocolate chips

Chocolate Ganache:

  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
  • In a large bowl, combine all of the ingredients except the mini chocolate chips.
  • Mix well.
  • Fold in the mini chocolate chips.
  • Spray 2 loaf pans with cooking spray.
  • Pour the batter evenly into the pans.
  • Bake for 57-60 minutes or until the top center of the bread bounces back when you touch it.
  • Allow the bread to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Run a knife along the inside edge of the pans, loosening the bread.
  • Turn the bread out onto wire racks.
  • Cool completely.

Prepare the ganache:

  • Place the chocolate chips and heavy cream in a microwave safe bowl. Melt the chocolate chips in 20-30 second intervals, stirring between each interval. Do this until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth, being careful to not let the chocolate get too hot.
  • Allow the ganache to sit for 3-4 minutes, then spoon it on top of the bread. Spread the chocolate just to the edges of the bread.
  • Allow the chocolate to set and cool.
  • Store in an airtight container.
